Avoda Ivrit Roundup

* Haaretz reports that the Supreme Court is actually making Avoda Ivrit more desirable by closing the loopholes allowing Jews in Judea and Samaria to exploit their Hamas-voting neighbors, outsourcing their tax evasion and taking advantage of their proximity to a mafia-run third world empire (my words, not theirs).

* Rabbi Yuval Cherlow, who reportedly did not stop at telling his students they did not HAVE to refuse orders, but told them they HAVE to obey, says Avoda Ivrit is Nazism. Brought to you by Jpost and the racists at RamFM, the clueless, yet entertaining South African-run station broadcasting in English out of Ramallah.

* There is once again an Avoda Ivrit web site! The New Israel Fund, through its proxy, Mossawa closed down the old Israel-based Avoda Ivrit directory, with its webmaster replacing the site with an apology. The new site could use some reader participation.

* Hey, even professional settler-hater Jeffrey Goldberg says he once dabbled in Avoda Ivrit (not in 'Nam, of course): "In the late nineteen-eighties, I worked for a time on a kibbutz in the Jezreel Valley, southeast of Haifa. I was a great believer in the philosophy known as avoda ivrit—the idea that Jews will redeem their land and themselves by hard physical labor."

* AvodaIvrit.co.il - an art studio in Tel Aviv. Nice.

HaRav Yuval Cherlow is truly the only one here practicing true Torah-true Judaism, including the mitzvah to love ones neighbor as oneself.

Rav Cherlow's words exemplify a true Torah that is a Darchei Shalom, a pathway to peace.

Avi, you are the kind of fellow who has always been the first to say "while I agree with the argument - Nazi comparison's are reprehensible, etc, etc, cheapen the memory yadda yadda yadda." Now you not only endorsed R' Cherlow's comparison, but defined it as loving one's neighbor as oneself?

Please elaborate what about the concept of Avoda Ivrit is Nazi-like?

    Is it:
    a) The fact that it is a concept popularized and espoused by early Labor Zionists, some of whom collaberated with the Nazis?

    b) Due to the fact that the Nazis decided not to hire Jews because they were leading a violent struggle to turn Germany into a Jewish State and killing German civilians via bombings, shootings and even poisoning food in restaurants (such as the German equivalent of Cafe Rimon)?

    c) Because Jews have a moral obligation to continue to employ Arabs even as the head of the Israeli-Arab Islamic Movement calls for an Israeli-Arab Intifada and PA Arabs democratically express their endorsement of Hamas's tactics?

    d) It is just awesome to be able to call settler-types Nazis. Leibovitz did it and it was badass. Cherlow rocks.

    e) Other

    Excellent post, Ezra.

R' Yuval Cherlow is one of the Tzohar Rabbis who called for dati soldiers to expel Jews. These Rabbis are controlled by the establishment.

Now the Tzohar Rabbis are waging war with the Haredim over Heter Mechira.

Ironically, both the Haredim and the Tzohar Rabbis supported expelling Jews, and now they're fighting it out over 2 bad alternatives, Heter Mechira vs. Gidul Nochri (i.e. Arab produce under the "Beit Yishmael" Hechsher).

The "man" wants to divide and conquer with these stupid conflicts to divert us.

We should ditch both of these alternatives and all unite under the banner of Otzar Ha-Aretz.

Using "Nazi" dilutes the reality of Nazism.

So let's use racist. Ezra- how is refusal to hire non-jews not racist?

It is as racist as fighting any war or giving charity to one's own poor first.

B"H AmEhad, You've got to be kidding! This is so typical of mamlakhtim, throwing out random p'suqim, yet not having a clue about what the halacha really is.

Sure we love our fellow Jews. But you forget is "who is a Jew?" See the Ramba"m Hil. Tshuvah and Avodah Zarah for who is in the category of "Ein k'israel klal, klal." Or is everyone just off the hook for being evil because s/he is a tinoq shenishbah?

Blinding bowing down to the "almighty" State, especially favoring the State over Torah, is closer to nazism than avodah ivrit.

Although some would call mamlakhtiyuth avodah zarah.

It is definitely NOT Zionism, not even according to hilonim.
